South Dakotans are meat lovers, and you\u2019ll find a lot of laid-back American style grills, steakhouses, and diners in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as of late we\u2019ve been lucky enough to attract some top chefs and creative culinary geniuses to the area (I\u2019m looking at you Skogen Kitchen!). Our list of best restaurants in the Black Hills area covers our favorite tried-and-true restaurants that have been around since our youth, the newcomers that are making moves, and all the casual eateries that are perfect for your family vacation on-the-go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you\u2019ll find the list broken down by city. Those bolded are what we consider our favorites and have become regular stops for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>JUMP AHEAD TO AN AREA: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"#hillcity\"><strong>Hill City<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"#keystone\"><strong>Keystone<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"#custer\"><strong>Custer<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"#rapidcity\"><strong>Rapid City<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"#spearfish\"><strong>Spearfish<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hillcity\"><span id=\"best-restaurants-in-hill-city-sd\">Best Restaurants in Hill City, SD<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hill City is a gem in the Black Hills! This quaint town is filled with history, fun shops and great restaurants. We love spending our summers on the rooftop patio at Bumpin\u2019 Buffalo, or having dinner at the historic Alpine Inn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alpineinnhillcity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alpine Inn<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is a Hill City staple and, while known for its steak dinner, it also has a fantastic German style lunch menu. The evening menu consists of the (extremely popular) steak dinner with one vegetarian option and a few kids menu items. It\u2019s simple, but delicious! However, their lunch menu is property my favorite and includes a plethora of sandwich options, all served with German potato salad. Of course, their dessert menu is also not something you want to pass up.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bumpinbuffalo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bumpin Buffalo<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 If you\u2019re after American \/ South Dakota classics, with large portions, all severed with great beer, this is your place. Try the Buffalo burger! They are open for lunch and dinner. Consider eating on their rooftop patio if the weather is nice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chute-rooster.site\/\"><strong>Chute<\/strong> <strong>Rooster<\/strong><\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemongrasshcsd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lemongrass<\/a> <\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"keystone\"><span id=\"best-restaurants-in-keystone-sd\">Best Restaurants in Keystone, SD<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Keystone is at the base of Mt. Rushmore, and therefore it has become extremely touristy with seasonal openings. The city virtually becomes a ghost town from October through May. That being said, it can be a really fun area to explore in the summer when the sidewalks are filled with people and shops and restaurants are all open. When we find ourselves there, these are the places we\u2019d eat at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a aria-label=\"Powderhouse Lodge Restaurant (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.powderhouselodge.com\/restaurant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Powderhouse Lodge Restaurant<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This place has a great reputation, and known for their Prime Rib. It\u2019s also a great spot for breakfast!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Ruby House (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/rubyhousekeystone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ruby House<\/strong><\/a> \/ <a aria-label=\"Red Garter Saloon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/redgartersaloon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Red Garter Saloon<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 The two places are attached and we love the vibe of these places \u2014 especially in the middle of summer. Catch some live cowboy entertainment at the Red Garter Saloon! It\u2019s a fun place to eat and drink with early 1900s decor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Grapes and Grinds (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grapesgrinds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Grapes and Grinds<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is an awesome coffee shop and wine bar, with some lighter breakfast options. You can easily grab something to go on your way to Mt. Rushmore or sit and enjoy the view!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Carver\u2019s Cafe (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mtrushmorenationalmemorial.com\/dining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Carver\u2019s Cafe<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is located at Mt. Rushmore so you\u2019ll be able to eat with a view! While it\u2019s not a regular stop for us, it\u2019s certainly worth a mention for those visiting the area and want to spend more time at Mt. Rushmore!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"custer\"><span id=\"best-restaurants-in-custer-sd\">Best Restaurants in Custer, SD<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Custer is a fun town to shop around and dine, and it has one of the BEST restaurants in the Black Hills. It would be a shame not to experience Skogen Kitchen while you\u2019re in the Black Hills \u2014 whether it\u2019s for breakfast or dinner. And if you can, catch a live show at the Custer Beacon to round off a wonderful day in Custer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a aria-label=\"Skogen Kitchen (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skogenkitchen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Skogen Kitchen<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is by far our favorite restaurant in the area! It\u2019s a delicious dinner option for foodies in the Black Hills, as well as breakfast\/brunch on the weekends (but call in advance to get reservations). It\u2019s a smaller place run by chef Joseph and his wife Eliza, who excel at making \u201cfine dining\u201d extremely causal and approachable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hjemam.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hjem A.M.<\/strong><\/a> (breakfast only) \u2013 This place is a cozy and delicious option for your breakfast outing! The menu is inspired by Scandinavian\/American flavors and will not disappoint.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackhillsburgerandpizza.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Black Hills Burger and Pizza Co.<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Often seen with a line out the door, this place has a fantastic reputation. Their burgers are inventive with a great selection of local craft beer. Try the popular \u201cHot Granny\u201d burger!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Custer Wolf (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.custerwolf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Custer Wolf<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 The Custer Wolf is a gem in Custer, with a comfortable environment, casual eats, and a great selection of beer and wine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Beggin\u2019 Burro (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/beggingburro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Beggin\u2019 Burro<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This Mexican restaurant has great margaritas, a small outside patio space, and classic Mexican food that won\u2019t disappoint!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a aria-label=\"Baker\u2019s Bakery (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BakersBakeryCafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baker\u2019s Bakery<\/a> <\/strong>\u2013 We love stopping here for breakfast or brunch, but they are also open for lunch. They have amazing caramel and cinnamon rolls that seem to always sell out late morning \u2014 so get there early!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rapidcity\"><span id=\"best-restaurants-in-rapid-city-sd\">Best Restaurants in Rapid City, SD<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapid City is the largest city in the Black Hills area and offers a plethora of restaurants and shopping. There are some restaurants that have been around since Garrett and I\u2019s youth growing up here! They are still some of our favorites today. There are obviously way more options than this list, but for the sake of supporting the local greats, I\u2019m not including chain restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a aria-label=\"Tally's Silver Spoon (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tallyssilverspoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tally\u2019s Silver Spoon<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is one of our favorite places for breakfast in Rapid City, and you\u2019ll likely see a line out the door on the weekends. It was a small diner for most of its life, but was re-invented with new ownership many years ago. It\u2019s a great option for breakfast and mimosas, or for dinner which has more of a fine dining menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delmonicogrill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Delmonico Grill<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This is a great option for a fancy night out! It\u2019s one of the best fine dining steakhouses in the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Kathmandu Bistro (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kathmandubistro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Kathmandu Bistro<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 If you love Indian food, this is your place. Located right downtown, it\u2019s one of our favorite places to go out for dinner. If you\u2019re around during the lunch hours they also have a lunch buffet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bokujoramen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bokujo Ramen<\/a><\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pour54.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pour 54<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Due to them offering a self-serve beer tap wall, all guests must be 21+ to eat and drink here. They offer a wide selection of local (and non-local) beer, wine, and hard ciders, as well as appetizers, salads, and pan pizzas. The environment is fun and filled with plenty of TVs and couches to lounge and watch the game.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independentalehouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Independent Ale House<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Another great option downtown, Independent Ale House has an impressive beer menu and great pizza. They have a few salad options as well, but their pizza menu is where they shine, and it\u2019s all served in a great environment.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Murphy's Pub & Grill  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.murphyspubandgrill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Murphy\u2019s Pub & Grill<\/strong> <\/a>\u2013 This is a sports bar downtown with great food and drinks. They have a full bar so order your favorite cocktail! The outdoor patio area is spacious and a great option in the summer months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spearfish\"><span id=\"best-restaurants-in-spearfish-sd\">Best Restaurants in Spearfish, SD<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Spearfish is a great city in the northern part of the Black Hills, nestled next to the infamous Spearfish Canyon (a must-visit area for hiking). This quaint college town has fantastic eats and breweries alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a aria-label=\"The Farmhouse Bistro & Bar (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/thefarmhousespearfish.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>The Farmhouse Bistro & Bar<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>\u2013 The Farmhouse is a newer restaurant for the area, and it comes with a great atmosphere! From the craft cocktails to the fancy entr\u00e9es, this place is perfect for special occasions and date nights \u2014 or just because you\u2019re a foodie and you\u2019re worth it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nonnaskitchensd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nonna\u2019s Kitchen<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Great itailan food!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"Antunez (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.antunezcuisine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Antunez<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This place serves top-notch dishes inspired by Mexico, South American, and Spain \u2014 with a great wine list to go with it. They also try to source as much local produce and meat as possible, which we love.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a aria-label=\"REDwater Kitchen (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.redwaterkitchen.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>REDwater Kitchen<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 This gastro pub is centrally located in Spearfish and is a great option for a quick lunch or dinner.
